¿ä¾à2 This paper explores the contradiction between capital and landed property over the evolutionary process of cluster by analyzing the geographical relocation and the land ownership expansion of Namsandong printing alley in Daegu. Firms may be in a contradictory situation in which they must distribute a part of their profits in the form of rent to landowners who have not contributed to the increase in land value. This contradiction between capital and landed property is a very important factor in the firm's strategic decisionmaking process, but has not been highlighted in existing approaches to cluster evolution. It might be because the literature presupposes that the contradiction in the evolution process leads to only a single path of cluster decline. In reality, however, some clusters do not decline in this situation but try to find various solutions on the regional context. The evolving process of Namsan-dong printing alley located in an inexpensive residential area near downtown shows two different spatial responses to the contradiction between capital and landed property. Cluster can be maintained by reducing the rent through the geographical relocation of cluster. In addition, the expansion of land ownership serves as a driving force to retain cluster's vitality in crisis by reinforcing the firms' embeddedness in the cluster.
