The purpose of this study is to provide an appropriate medical service provision at the local level by considering rapid changes in the demographic structure in Korea. For the purpose, we investigate the spatial variations in the demographic structural changes in Korea since 2000 when the country achieves the aged society. Focus has been laid on the spatial distributional changes in the population of two age groups'(the childhood and the elderly) and the medical facilities related with them. We examine the spatial correlation between the population and the related medical facilities for each age group over the period, and estimate the spatial Markov transition probabilities. The demand for and the provision of medical facilities related with each age group has been simulated by applying the Markov chain process. The results of short-term prediction reveal that the population of the elderly seems to increase more rapidly, while the population of the childhood decrease. At the same time, the medical facilities related with the childhood have been predicted a bit increment at a few the Mega cities, while the rapid augmentation of the medical facilities related with the elderly over the nation. However, the increasing rate is much higher at the Mega cities rather than the rural areas showing higher elderly index. |
