This study aims at critically analyzing the ¡®Safe Cities Project¡¯ carried out by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security (MOPAS) during 2009 and 2010. It also explores the problems and the points for improvements in safety and security in terms of crime and fear of crime as a part of the project and models developed for the project. In summary, it was found that there are room for improvement in the principles and process of the Safe City project when compared to renowned official standards, such as ISO 31000 Risk Management and KS A 8800 Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design - Fundamentals. Secondly, it is required that colleges and research institutes are involved in crime audits and performance assessment for the Safe City programs as independent 3rd parties. Thirdly, it has to be considered that the Safe City models include overlapping and relevancy between various safety elements, such as fire safety and traffic safety. Finally, it is crucial that the Safe City program should be institutionalized through legislation so that Safe City programs have sustainability after this one time project by the government. |
