Arboretums began in a fairly practical dimension to cultivate and reproduce decorative and edible plants as well as medicinal plants; however, recently, they have come to play roles for academic research with the plants displayed and also as social education institutes for education or enlightenment. Arboretums in Korea started to be formed genuinely after the mid-1980's. This is thought be attributed to the improvement of recognition on natural environment. This study aims to examine the characteristics of planning and management and operation methods of major overseas arboretum facilities and also investigate the latest design plans from the critical viewpoint in order to suggest implications. Arboretums that began to be formed in the early 1900's in Korea are located nationwide nowadays in various types including public, national, and private ones. And they tend to be specialized according to each one's locational or facility characteristics. However, they are very different from the overseas arboretums examined here in this paper. The characteristics of overseas arboretum facilities drawn as conclusion of this study and the implications from the aspects of planning are as written below: First, the planning basically faithful to the concepts of collection, exhibition, research, education, or preservation which arboretums should be equipped with and such characteristics are reflected in the planning of architecture or water space. Second, it is needed to plan to secure a scale that is bigger than a certain scale in order to reflect the unique characteristics that botanical gardens have. Third, it is necessary to secure the concepts by space for each of their areas specialized in the arboretums and make plans considering planned approaches utilizing various landscape facilities and user convenience. |
