The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of residential characteristics on the residents¡¯ depression, particularly focusing on the burden of housing costs, and also to identify the effect of the burden of housing costs by tenure type on depression using the binary logistic model. Empirical results showed that residents¡¯ depression can worsen, if living in a jeonse situation or monthly rental, compared to an owner-occupation situation. Moreover, a higher level of satisfaction relative to residential environment can also alleviate extent of depression. In addition, it was found that renters experienced more burden of housing costs than home owners. Particularly, it was confirmed that the burden of high housing costs for monthly renters is the key factor causing depression among housing tenure types. Results showed that the policy for housing assistance should extend to low-income residents, as well as rental housing residents. Moreover, it is also necessary to provide assistance to enable renters to acquire their own homes. |
