In 2000s, the Korean government introduced a PRH(Public Rent House) system to support low-income people. The key point of this system was that it mandated that a certain percentage of PRH be legally provided in newly built apartment complexes. This provides an opportunities for low-income people to live in high-priced areas. In this situation, low-income people living in high-priced areas are affected by two conflicting factors: while low-income people can live at lower costs in high-priced areas, they also faced with severe discrimination from their neighbors. Therefore, we conducted an empirical analysis using ¡®the PRH tenants panel survey in Seoul (1st and 2nd)¡¯ and ¡®the National Housing Sales Price Trend Survey (2016y, 2017y)¡¯. Regarding analysis methods, the Logit and Ordered-Logit models were used. The results indicated that the apartment prices in neighborhoods did not have a significant consequence on the ¡®discrimination¡¯ felt by residents of PRA. Conversely, the higher the apartment prices in the surrounding area, the higher the satisfaction of PRH. Finally, if residents of PRH experienced discrimination, their housing satisfaction dropped by about 2% point. This effect was similar to a 10% increase in housing prices in the surrounding area. |
