(Background and Purpose) In the architectural heritage field, the digitalization process was relatively slow compared to other industrial fields. Due to the absence of an integrated conventional management system, the ¡°secondary information production system¡± and ¡°information sharing system¡± are insufficient. Through the representative case study of digital restoration of overseas architectural heritage, this study aims to create basic research data on the activation of spatial experience made with the augmented reality (AR) technology, the standardization of digital restoration, and digital DB construction related to architectural and cultural heritage. (Method) First, it identifies the development trend of the AR technology through literature research, studying the definition of digital heritage and the needs for the digital restoration of architectural heritage. Second, based on the previous research studies, it explores the 3D modeling technology process, standardization methods, and characteristics to create a spatial experience using the AR technology. Third, the representative overseas cases are analyzed based on the field survey and the literature survey focusing on the methods and characteristics of spatial experience. Lastly, we draw implications for the development and vitalization of the spatial experience of the national architectural heritage. (Results) It has identified five cases in Rome, Italy, where immersive contents for the spatial experience of famous architectural heritage are continuously developed, to research on the characteristics of digital restoration methods, types, and intensity of spatial experience elements. A summary of the analysis cases shows that AR applications based on immersive contents are strategically placed in the important locations of Rome¡¯s historic center. These strategic locations provide a comprehensive view of the local history and culture by establishing an ¡°urban heritage tourism service network,¡± which combines genres, contents, and space experience. The ¡°story resources¡± such as historical background, events, environmental factors are recognized as important ¡°non-physical assets,¡± which explain the heritages from various angles to create a high level of immersive experience. (Conclusions) This study derived the following implications from the case analysis: first, as 3D stereoscopic modeling of architectural heritage can be recognized as digital heritage, it needs in-depth research in the architectural and the archaeological field. Furthermore, it should be preceded by a specific development of digital modeling standardization suitable for architectural heritage. Second, to enhance the spatial experience of the architectural heritage as a "place," it is necessary to use local cultural and historical story resources. Third, to recognize the architectural heritage as a part of the city and not as a single separate piece, it is necessary to draw a comprehensive masterplan of spatial experience system which can be defined as an urban network. |
