¿ä¾à2 (Background and Purpose) The interdisciplinary application of knowledge across various fields has led to the application of narratology across various disciplines. By the early 20th century, theories related to narration were incorporated into spatial design studies. Interest in narration has increased in contemporary society, and narration is actively used in various fields such as culture, comics, animation, film, games, advertising, design, home shopping, theme parks, and sports. In the field of narratology, Seymour Chatman introduced the concepts of story and discourse. The story refers to what is narrated (the narrative content), whereas the discourse refers to how it is narrated (the narrative method). Chatman¡¯s narrative structure played a significant role in the development of spatial narratology. Utilizing the abundant research materials provided by the various architectural designs of the SANAA, this study aims to integrate Chatman¡¯s narrative structure into the SANAA¡¯s architectural spaces. By combining this with the SANAA¡¯s design characteristics, this study also aims to classify narrative types within spatial design as unique features of the SANAA¡¯s narrative. (Methods) First, this study focuses on the background and purpose of the research. Second, through data investigation, a theoretical review of narrative concepts is introduced to aid in understanding narrative structures. Third, based on a review of Chatman¡¯s narrative structure theory, this study applies to the spatial domain. After listing its characteristic elements, representative works of the SANAA architecture are analyzed to identify the corresponding spatial narrative elements, thereby demonstrating their spatial narrative characteristics. Fourth, the SANAA buildings are analyzed using the derived analytical framework. (Results) The analysis of five projects, labeled A, B, C, D, and E, reveals that the SANAA¡¯s spatial narratives had strong cultural and regional characteristics, emphasizing the integration of buildings with nature. Regarding the expressive characteristics of the narratives, all examples display hybridity. This reflects that in the SANAA architecture, various elements such as locality, culture, and place are fused as a means of narrative expression. Additionally, internal circulation is generally free and unconstrained by the function and form of the space, allowing users to freely choose their paths and create their own stories. The most prominent feature of the performative outcome of space is community, followed by symbolism and interactivity. Overall, these projects promote interaction within the community, facilitate user-space interactions, and exhibit diverse forms of communication, symbolizing the local spirit and residents. (Conclusion) This study applies Chatman¡¯s narrative theory to the spatial domain, forming spatial narrative elements, and analyzes the SANAA¡¯s renowned architectural works based on these elements. Through this approach, new spatial narrative types and potential developments are explored.
